Chemistry and Biochemistry 2019 Reunion
Kindly submitted by the department head, Dr. Andrew Grant

This past September, during Homecoming Weekend, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry hosted a very successful reunion of former graduates of both programs. Some 40-plus chemists and biochemists ventured back to campus to talk about former times, reconnect with former faculty and staff, and help celebrate Dr. Barclay’s 90th year.

The weekend started on the Thursday night with a wine and cheese reception in Tweedie Hall. There were lots of smiles and hugs as alumni who hadn’t been back to campus in years looked upon familiar faces.

Friday saw a very busy schedule of talks in Barclay’s Cragg Resource Centre, beginning with an acknowledgement of the original Indigenous custodians of the land on which Mount Allison is built.

ąű¶ł´«Ă˝Ň•îl extremely grateful that Sarah Dobrowolski (’07), Kelly Dakin-Hache (’91), Tony Wu (’72), Bruce Balcom (’85), Emerson Sanford (’64), Sandy Briggs (’75), Leann Groswald (’07), Taylor Brooks (biology ’15), Dave Hiltz (’91), Stephen Ball (’00), Aalim Weljie (’96), Heather Spinner (’00), Tracy Morkin (’96), Ernest Awoonor-Williams (’14), Dave Norman (’01), Stephen Locke (’83), and Abby-Jo Payne (’14) all managed to come back to tell the rest of us how Mount A influenced and informed their life and scientific careers since graduating.

Dr. Barclay’s great friend and former colleague, Dr. Tito Scaiano from the University of Ottawa, gave an engaging “plenary” lecture entitled, Design and implementation of novel materials for heterogeneous photocatalysis. We were also treated to a fascinating display of pictures and information on the history of the department put together by University Archivist David Mawhinney. Thank you David!

A reunion banquet was held in the newly-renovated Windsor Grand Room, with many current students, former professors, and staff in attendance. Many of us met for brunch at Mel’s Saturday morning and then walked through the Waterfowl Park. In the afternoon we joined with the rest of Homecoming and attended the football game, where we watched the Mounties teach StFX a lesson by beating them 36-11!

I’d like to thank all the students who helped organize the reunion, as well as Marcie (Meekins ’12) and Eric (Donovan). It is a real pleasure to have been in contact with many graduates from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s; David Nickerson (’48), Tom Edgett (’49) (now deceased), Douglas Carson (’58), Marguerite Ashworth (’58), Helen Foote (’64), Mike Shreve (’66), Carolyn Munro (’69), Bill Briggs (’78), Helen Graves Smith (’86), and Krista Hopson (’96), to name a few. I can report that the current members of the department were very appreciative of all who attended. Stay tuned for something similar in the future, where we will give a push for more biochemists to return to campus.
