The Mounties: Emma Schurman
Third-year Hockey Mountie Emma Schurman, from Oakville, ON, knew she wanted to study on a small campus. Originally from the Maritimes, when she got the opportunity to continue playing hockey at Mount Allison, she knew it was the right fit.
Schurman began playing hockey when she was eight in the Oakville Hornets women’s league. In Grade 11 she played Midget AA in Burlington and then Junior with the Burlington Junior Barracudas.
She says what she loves most about the sport is the people.
“Basically, you have another family for life,” she says. “Being on the team made it a lot easier to come to Mount Allison and have 25 new friends on the first day.”
Playing left wing, she believes her greatest strengths are hard work, dedication, and strength.
An assistant captain, Schurman was recently awarded Athlete of the Week for her performance vs. Dal, where she scored the overtime goal to win the game 1-0. The win capped off a three-point weekend for the Mounties, putting the team back in playoff contention to kick off the second half of the season.
“The award meant a lot,” she says. “It was nice to be rewarded, but it was our whole team that got us the win.”
Schurman credits coming to Mount Allison as her most memorable sporting moment.
“I always dreamed of playing university hockey, but never knew if it would ever happen,” she says. “So, the opportunity to play here was really exciting.”
A Commerce student, Schurman is looking ahead to an MBA and CPA designation with the plan to work in accounting.
