$30,000 award one of the top student awards in Atlantic Canada
SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University Commerce student Nathan Robichaud has received a 2021 from the Sobey Foundation.
Valued at $30,000 each, the awards — nine in total for 2021 — support the development of future business leaders and business programs in Atlantic Canadian Universities. The Awards were announced on March 18, 2021.
“Nathan is a wonderful student and worthy recipient of the Frank H. Sobey Award,” says Mount Allison’s Dean of Business and Social Sciences Dr. Nauman Farooqi. “I look forward to seeing where his entrepreneurial path will lead and know he will be successful in his future career aspirations.”
Robichaud, who is currently in his third year of study, is from Yarmouth, NS and began his university studies in Science before moving to Commerce within Mount Allison’s Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies in his second year.
“Switching programs mid-degree was a big decision for me but the right one,” says Robichaud. “I am honoured and humbled to receive the Frank H. Sobey Award, which bears the name of one of our region’s biggest entrepreneurs. Thank you to the Sobey Foundation for this support and recognition.”
Robichaud is focusing his studies on economics and entrepreneurship, the latter he is already actively pursuing through involvement with two student-run businesses, as general manager for the Sackville-based franchise of Kangaroo food delivery service and SMPLX Ltd, which focuses on nutritional supplements for athletes.
He is also working to gain business experience during his studies, interning as an analyst with High Tide Capital, a private investment fund through their co-op program and working for Metafy, a business dedicated to on generating inclusive practices and website HTML for companies of all sizes, founded by Mount Allison professor and Canada Research Chair in Intercultural Encounter Dr. Lauren Beck in 2020.
“I’m really interested in entrepreneurship. My experiences being part of these businesses as well as internship opportunities have been a valuable part of my education so far, along with classes and traditional courses,” says Robichaud. “The funding from the Sobey Award will not only help support my studies but also future plans for building my own business.”
Outside of his studies, Robichaud is also a member of Mount Allison’s Commerce student society, the Case competition society, and the Lacrosse team.
