Mount Allison Commerce student awarded Futures Fund Scholarship
Award to be presented at Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year gala event in Toronto
SACKVILLE, NB – Kelton Welsh is one of ten students across Canada to receive a 2019 Futures Fund Scholarship for Outstanding Leadership. The awards, valued at $7,500, are presented at Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year February Awards Gala in Toronto. Welsh is a student in Mount Allison's Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies.
“I’m honoured to receive a Futures Fund Scholarship,” says Welsh. “It was surreal and humbling to have my academic activities and everyday work recognized in this way.”
established the Futures Fund Scholarship for Outstanding Leadership to honour and mentor ten young Canadian university business students each year who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in their academic and extracurricular initiatives.
“Kelton’s commitment and contributions to his studies and extracurricular activities are exemplary,” says Dr. Nauman Farooqi, Mount Allison’s Dean of Business and Social Sciences. “ąű¶ł´«Ă˝Ň•îl proud and excited to see his leadership recognized with the Futures Funds Scholarship.”
From Calgary, AB, Welsh is studying finance and marketing with a minor in computer science. He is currently completing a joint honours project with Commerce and looking at technology and business relations.
Along with a busy academic schedule, Welsh, whose sister also attended Mount Allison, has worked and volunteered with a number of organizations on campus throughout his degree.
Welsh organized the University’s annual Business of the Arts workshop, held in the Fall term. The workshop is an annual event that sees Commerce and Arts students engaged in discussions and workshops with faculty, alumni, and community members whose careers focus in the arts. Welsh worked as the workshop’s intern throughout the summer and leading up to the fall event.
“I had participated in the Business of Science workshop the previous year and learned so much from this experience,” says Welsh. “When I heard of the internship for a similar event focusing on the Arts, I knew I wanted to be involved. It was a great opportunity to help organize an event like this and work with university staff.”
He also served as the financial officer for the MtAUN, the University’s Model UN society, which held its largest conference to date in 2019, and volunteered with the MtA Hacks, a student-led computer science conference and hackathon, and Habitat for Humanity. Living on campus his first two years, Welsh was a residence assistant his second year and plays intramural hockey.
“The sense of community on campus and the support that comes with that have been important factors for me since I started at Mount A,” he says. “Before my sister came to Mount A, I had never been to the East Coast. I feel very much at home here.”
Welsh is graduating this spring and plans to pursue experience in the workforce before looking at grad school.
