Meet Lucy Ofori — Mount Allison’s EDI Student Advisor

07 Mar 2023
New equity, diversity, and inclusion role to support BIPOC and equity-deserving students

Growing up in Brampton, ON, Lucy Ofori always found herself drawn to helping others and trying to be a light to those who were having a bad day.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at McMaster University and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate from Essex Business School, she volunteered with LGBT Youth Line, providing peer support for individuals in crisis. She then took on a role with RedefineTwenty, a BIPOC organization in Hamilton, ON, coordinating events for women of colour. Those experiences solidified her passion to pursue a career in inclusion and belonging. She went on to complete two more internships with Ubisoft Toronto and TD Bank before moving to New Brunswick.

At Mount Allison, Ofori will provide one-on-one advising, support, and referrals to BIPOC and other equity-deserving students, along with working with student clubs and societies. She will also deliver education and training in areas such as systemic racism and microaggressions, along with collaborative sessions with the International Centre and Indigenous Affairs.

“Being a woman of colour who is also queer and has ADHD, I have faced the same kinds of troubles and barriers that a lot of equity deserving students have faced,” says Ofori. “I want to really show that everybody has a place and can succeed at Mount A.”

Ofori started at Mount Allison on February 1 and says the passion on campus for continuing to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive campus is eye-opening and inspiring. She is looking forward to being a voice for students and the advocate they may need.

“I want students to know that I am here to hear you out, put your words into action, and create a safe space for everyone at Mount Allison.”

Outside of her work, Ofori loves to bike or kayak and bake different types of bread. She also has two wonderful cats in her life — Waluigi and Tiggy.
