Dr. Ian Sutherland to be installed as Mount Allison’s 16th President and Vice-Chancellor on November 22

Guest Speaker Alumnus Ian Hanomansing (’83, LLD ‘03) with a Community Reception to follow at the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts 

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison is pleased to announce the installation of Dr. Ian Sutherland as the University’s 16th President and Vice-Chancellor. The ceremony will take place on Friday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. in Convocation Hall, featuring acclaimed CBC journalist and Mount Allison alumnus Ian Hanomansing (’83, LLD ‘03) as the guest speaker. All community members are invited to attend.  

This event marks an important chapter in the University’s history. Following the ceremony, a community reception will be held at the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts, inviting all members of the University and the wider community to celebrate this important milestone.

“This is a momentous occasion for Mount Allison University,” says Cheryl Hodder, KC (‘81), Chair of the Board of Regents. “Dr. Sutherland’s installation as our 16th President and Vice-Chancellor marks the start of an exciting new chapter. His leadership and vision will guide Mount Allison as we embrace future opportunities. I am proud to celebrate this milestone with our community and look forward to the University’s continued growth under his leadership.” 

The President’s Installation is a significant tradition, marking the official moment when the new University President is formally entrusted with the responsibilities of their role. This milestone highlights Mount Allison's commitment to leadership, tradition, and an inspiring future.  

Event Highlights

Installation and Investiture: Dr. Sutherland will take the oath of office, administered by the Chair of the Board of Regents, Cheryl Hodder, KC ('81), and be formally invested by Chancellor Lynn Loewen ('82). He will receive Mount Allison’s regalia, adorned in the University's traditional garnet and gold colours. 

Special Guest Speaker: Mount Allison University is honoured to welcome alumnus and esteemed CBC journalist Ian Hanomansing ('83, LLD ‘03) as the guest speaker for the ceremony.  

Musical Performances: The ceremony and reception will feature performances by faculty and students from Mount Allison’s Department of Music:

  • Dr. Kiera Galway, Conductor – Professor
  • Jennifer Del Motte, Piano – Professor
  • Dr. James Kalyn - Saxophone - Professor 
  • Bridget Anderson, Olivia Short, and Ethan Walter, Clarinet – Students
  • Amelia Hurst, Clarinet and Bass Clarinet – Student
  • Clare Lowe, Soprano – Student

Greetings to the President: Dr. Sutherland will receive messages of congratulations from universities, community leaders, government officials, and others, recognizing this major milestone. 

Student Research Presentations: Student researchers will present their Independent Student Research Projects during the reception at the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts:
